Long noted as probably one of the more "dud" cards you can get. Hippo himself isn't necessarily bad, as he does clear your Status Effects and can apply a Status Immunity Shield, but it only applies to yourself. Unsurprisingly, that tends to draw the ire of other Party members. His sub sadly is also not too great either, granting 15% Damage Reduction when subbed on A, but only if you're inflicted with a Status Effect.
Fortunately, Awakening does wonders for Hippo, giving him a nice stat boost as well as greatly improving his Main Skill and Sub Skill. Hippo's Status Clear and Status Immunity Shield now apply to the whole Party and has a 100% chance to do as well! On top of that, his Sub Skill makes him a decent Damage Reduction sub and with his Awakening Skill, Hippo's immune to Paralysis. Thankfully, Hippo's another example of a card that's gone from near-useless to very much worth using thanks to Awakening.
That said, Hippo will no doubt be useful for any Dungeon or Colosseum. With his guaranteed Status Immunity Shield, Hippo's great for clearing the Party's Status Effects and preventing any other Status Effects or Debuffs from hitting the Party while also granting 15% Damage Reduction so long as the Shield is active.

Hippo gets a very nice improvement on his Main Skill as his Status Immunity shield and Status Clear now applies Party-wide (and with a 100% chance at that!). And much like before, as long as you have the Status Immunity Shield active, you gain 15% Damage Reduction from attacks. While that's not exactly very high, it's much better than nothing and gives similar cards like Isabella and Cassiel a run for their money.
Frankly, it's a bit subpar. While the Damage Reduction is quite good, it also requires you be inflicted with a Status Effect for it to activate.
Given much better Damage Reduction and Ace subs exist, Hippo fares quite poorly as a Sub.
Hippo's Sub Skill get revamped a bit, now allowing him to grant 10-15% Damage Reduction when subbed on A.
While it's not exactly stable unlike other Damage Reduction cards, Hippo has an additional quirk where the Damage Reduction jumps to 20% if you're inflicted with a Status Effect.
But that said, Hippo's certainly not a bad Damage Reduction sub and it's far better than what it previously was.
Much like Awakened Lapis, Hippo is completely immune to the effects of Paralysis.
However, an unlisted bonus to this Skill is a rather interesting Immunity or Resistance to a number of other Status Ailments.
- Immune to Paralysis (Card will NEVER be Paralyzed.)
- Immune to Confusion (You can always pick him up.)
- Immune to Blindness (You will see the Cardinal Number of Hippo's Card over the Blindness effect.)
- Immune to Petrification (Card will NEVER be Petrified.)
